I was diagnosed with FacioScapuloHumeral Muscular Dystrophy when I was around 4, at the same time that my mother and grandmother were diagnosed.
My symptoms were minimal at that point. I was able to play sports like baseball, hockey, and tennis, and I was able to pretend that this mysterious illness was not my own.
My chronic illness was a scarlet letter that I tried so desperately to hide. The hiding became automatic. Don’t sit near the stacking chairs so I won’t be asked to pick one up if someone needs it. Don’t try to put a bag on the overhead rack on the train or the plane. Don’t do a bench press or a push-up. Only fall for the girls that are already in relationships or that are unattainable.
It wasn’t until my senior year in college that I finally told my best friends. It felt like I was letting them into a place that was so sacred and vulnerable. They were inside my skin where a little poke or a prod could cause so much damage.
I am a licensed psychologist in Texas and New York with a private practice that is web and phone-based with clients from all over the world. I have been married to my wife for 15 years and we have a 13-year-old son and a 4-old-daughter.
I can meet with you as an individual or together with your partner. My two main focuses are relationships and chronic health conditions. I also can also help you with depression, anxiety, stress, and life-changes.
I can work with you to help you identify, understand, and change the patterns and programming that are keeping you stuck. We are conditioned to see ourselves and the world around us based on how we are related to in our early years. We develop defenses and coping mechanisms to help to manage painful situations. These coping mechanisms don’t just disappear when we reach adulthood.
Therapy is a process where we engage and explore together to create new paradigms that fit with what you want for your present and future. This means creating the reality that you want for yourself versus what was imposed upon you.
When I work with you, I will create a customized plan for therapy that fits your needs. As your therapist, I will help you learn to see your life from another angle and use your innate strengths to face your challenges and reach your goals.
